Kale & Pinklewurst
Only a few years ago I never heard of Pinkelwurst and for that matter neither did many of my friends of German extraction. My introduction came in a form of a sit down dinner at the American Turners of New York (ATNY). With lots of good food and great company, I don't want to miss any more. The date has pretty much been established as the Sunday before the football Super Bowl. You can be sure that it will be well attended next year.
Steuben Day Parade
Ever since any living Turner can remember, the Long Island Turners have taken part in the Steuben Day Parade up New York's 5th Avenue. We are a proud member of Turner Post 1680 of the American Legion and have the honor of being the leading color guard in the parade.
Men' Hike
A tradition in the New York District is to hike through the woods in Orchard Beach Park in the middle of winter. The families get their own hike in the much nicer weather of September. It is about 2 miles long with refreshments before and after and plenty of great Gemuetlichkeit throughout.
Hallenfest
Literally a celebration in the hall. Hall being meant in the same terms as a Union Hall. It is here that Cultural Competition among the societies of the district takes place. Since the LIT lost its gym facilities a few years ago, ATNY uses the Hallenfest to hold a gymnastic tournament for their own junior members.
