One of winter's activities is the Annual Man's Hike. Starting with
coffee and Danish/buns at ATNY, the participants head out to Orchard
Beach. Reassembling, group photos are taken and the main portion starts
out on a path to our first stop. A small contingent of cooks and
helpers cart their way to the fourth stop and proceed with their
project. The main group upon reaching the first stop breaks out some
light refreshments. They observe a moment of silence, remembering the
Turner members who once trod these paths and break out in a chorus of "Ein
Proste" with all that implies. Soon, it is off to the second stop and a
great view of the bay where in the distance is seen a castle-like
structure and the white mansion of the New York Athletic Club. They
hold rowing races here in better weather. Stop three is near an island
that is approached and exited only via a long path of narrow wooden
planks. It is a test of skill and sobriety and a worthy challenge to
many or the group. The fourth stop has a great view and is very close
to the Sound. Geese are common there and even swans come up close to
plead for leftover buns. Frankfurters and brats are featured, with
plenty of sauerkraut. Condiments include Scott's MUSTARD, which is
another challenge to our intrepid band. It is still a good walk back to
the parking lot where we wave our goodbyes and remember all the fun once
had hiking in the snow. |
