A current Google search gets about 70
hits for Pinklewurst vs. over 1100 for Pinkelwurst (mostly auf Deutsch).
Themes range all the way from lyrics to a song (Kale and Pinkelwurst,
Kale and Pinkelwurst, my heart cries for Kale and Pinkelwurst....) to
fictional characters (Otto von Pinkelwurst) to recipes and restaurant
reviews. There are also quite a few other sites where you may
purchase the North German sausage.
Only a few years ago I never heard of Pinkelwurst and
for that matter neither did many of my friends of German extraction.
My introduction came in a form of a sit down dinner at the American
Turners of New York (ATNY). ATNY celebrated their 20th K & P
February 3rd 2007. The date has pretty much been established as
the Sunday before the football Super Bowl. You can be sure that it will
be well attended next year.
Some say it's a traditional Christmas time dish.
Others say it was traditional fare during the hard times when the
sausage contained more barley grain than meat. Whatever the
origin, the Kale and Pinkelwurst as featured at the ATNY is a festive
event with emphasis on good food and Gemuetlichkeit.
Many thanks to Peter Sammer of ATNY for taking the
photos on the right and sharing them with us.
